My kids love holidays, especially the geeky ones. Wednesday, was a bigger celebration than Christmas at the Heart House. It was the birthday of Albert Einstein (of e=mc2 fame), Frank Borman (one of the first astronauts to circle the moon) and Billy Crystal (aka Miracle Max from The Princess Bride). If that wasn’t enough, it was also National Potato Chip Day and Learn About Butterflies Day. In addition, Google posted a special doodle honoring origami expert, Akira Yoshizawa. But the thing that really made the day for my kids was that it was Pi Day. In honor of such a monumental day, I would like to share the Pi pie that we made to celebrate.

Tuesday Tips – Counting Tips
Counting Stitches
When working a cast on for larger projects, it is often necessary to cast on a LOT of stitches. It isn’t unusual for a sweater cast on to have more than 200 stitches cast on. These large cast ons are not things you want to do twice so how can you make sure you have enough stitches cast on? Here are a couple of tricks I use.
Dandelion Bouquets
One of the oddities of life is that the value of an item is often determined by circumstances, rather than the item itself. A baseball, for example, is worth a few dollars unless it happens to be a baseball that Babe Ruth signed.
Take, for example, the dandelion. In one’s yard, they are considered weeds. There are dozens of treatments available at your local garden center for the prevention and removal of dandelions. Some people spend hundreds, even thousands, of dollars removing these pesky yellow flowers. But let those dandelions be presented to you by a little child and suddenly they become a rare gift. More precious than the rarest rose. I have been given many bouquets of flowers over the years but the ones that are most precious have been the ones picked from the yard by the hands of my loving children.

Frog-proofing Tags
Last week, I mentioned using inventory tags to label gauge swatches. While that is a great way to keep notes on your swatch, it just so happens that inventory tags come in handy for a variety of other knitting needs. You can use these same little cardboard tags to mark lots of important things in your knitting and save yourself the aggravation of making one of those beginner mistakes that often befall us when we put down our knitting.

Dilithium Crystals
Sometimes my geeky side sneaks out when I am naming patterns. Such is the case with my latest sock pattern. This lacy sock is feminine and a bit flirty with your favorite skirt or dress. The diamond pattern, named for the dilithium crystals that power starships of the future, flatters the curves of your legs.
