Better be Gryffindor!!


Those of you who are not Harry Potter fans will not understand.
This pattern is called Horcrux by Susan Pierce Lawrence. It was this quarter’s sock in the Six Sock KAL. I modified the pattern to make it a two color sock because my dd HAD to have Gryffindor socks. I cast on with both yarns at once to give the ruffled effect at the top – she likes frilly.

Realized when I looked at this photo that there is a mistake in the lightning bolt lace pattern on one sock. Oh well too late to fix it now. I may have trouble getting them off her. She is currently checking to see which shoes look best with her new socks.

Now she wants a matching scarf and hat to wear to the midnight release party for book 7. And DS has put in an order for Ravenclaw socks. Glad these are worsted weight so they knit up fast!

    Tanya, I was doing some late night reading in my new book, More Sensational Knitted Socks and I discovered that my “invented” cast on actually has a name. Charlene Schurch calls is a Frilled Cast On. Who knew? And here I thought I had made up something new. She also does a two color cast on but hers is not done in the same way as this one.

    Hi Tanya
    I just call it a cuff but here is what I did that was different from Susan’s pattern. To get the ruffle effect at the top of the cuff, I cast on holding one strand of each color of yarn at the same time – in other words, I used two strands of yarn for the cast on. I was careful to alternate colors when casting on. This gives you twice the number of stitches as needed on the needle. When you knit the first row of ribbing, you will knit (or purl) 2 stitches together – one of each color – for EACH stitch in the ribbing. This brings you back to the number of stitches that you should have and causes the top of the cuff to ruffle a little. After that I knit 3 more rows of the ribbing in scarlet followed by 2 rows in gold, two rows in scarlet, two more rows of gold and finally five rows of scarlet for the total of 15 rows of ribbing that the original pattern called for. For the rest of the pattern I followed the directions with the exception of the color changes. Hope that explains it.

    LOVE EM! What a creative use of the two colors. I really like the top of the cuff. That is different from the pattern–what do you call it?

    Thank you all for the kind comments. The pattern is not difficult. Everything other than the lace on the leg is ribbing or stockinette. The only tricky part in the lace is the last reverse in the lightning bolt. Row 15 and 16 are just a little tricky because you ‘borrow’ a stitch but if you pay attention to what you are doing it isn’t a problem.
